  • Either of the following conditions is met (2 trip detection logic):
    • When engine is started cold and warmed up, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change.
    • After the warmed up engine is stopped and then next cold engine start is performed, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change.

for Mexico Models

  • Case 1

The engine coolant temperature is between -40 and 60°C (-40 and 140°F) when the engine is started, and both of the following conditions are met (2 trip detection logic):

    1. Vehicle driven at varying speeds (accelerated and decelerated).

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Cold Start Monitor (except Mexico Models)

When a cold engine start is performed and then the engine is warmed up, if the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and this DTC is stored.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Soak Monitor (except Mexico Models)

If the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change after the warmed up engine is stopped and then the next cold engine start is performed, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and this DTC is stored.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor High Side Stuck Monitor (for Mexico Models)

The ECM monitors the sensor voltage and uses this value to calculate the engine coolant temperature. If the sensor voltage output deviates from the normal operating range, the ECM interprets this deviation as a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor and stores the DTC.

Examples:

  • When starting the engine and the engine coolant temperature is between -40 and 60°C (-40 and 140°F):

If after driving for 250 seconds, the engine coolant temperature remains within 3°C (5.4°F) of the starting temperature, the DTC is stored (2 trip detection logic).

  • When starting the engine and the engine coolant temperature is higher than 60°C (140°F):

If after driving for 250 seconds, the ECM remains within 1°C (1.8°F) of the starting temperature, the DTC is stored (6 trip detection logic).

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

HINT:

  • If any of DTCs P0115, P0117, P0118 or P0125 are output simultaneously with DTC P0116, the engine coolant temperature sensor may have an open or a short circuit. Troubleshoot those DTCs first.
  • When the DTC is output, check the engine coolant temperature using the Techstream. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp. If the Coolant Temp value is lower than the actual engine coolant temperature, the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit may be malfunctioning. In this case, check the wire harnesses and connectors (and those connections) between the ECM and the engine coolant temperature sensor first.
  • Read Freeze Frame Data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as Freeze Frame Data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, Freeze Frame Data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
