REPLACEMENT

PROCEDURE

1. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL (except Torque Vectoring Differential)

(a) Stop the vehicle on a level surface.

(b) Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.

(c) Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the rear differential drain plug and gasket.

(d) Drain the differential oil.

(e) Install a new gasket and the rear differential drain plug.

Torque:

39 N·m {398 kgf·cm, 29 ft·lbf}

2. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for Torque Vectoring Differential)

(a) Stop the vehicle on a level surface.

(b) Remove the 2 bolts.

(c) Move aside the No. 2 differential disconnect cover as shown in the illustration.

(d) Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.

(e) Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the rear differential drain plug and gasket.

(f) Drain the differential oil.

(g) Install a new gasket and the rear differential drain plug.

Torque:

39 N·m {398 kgf·cm, 29 ft·lbf}

3. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL (except Torque Vectoring Differential)

(a) Add Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LX SAE 75W-85 API GL-5 or equivalent.

*a 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.196 in.)

(b) Pour oil into the rear differential carrier assembly so that the oil level is within 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.196 in.) of the bottom of the filler plug opening.

NOTICE:

Excessively large or small quantities of oil may cause problems.

Recommended viscosity:

SAE 75W-85

Standard oil grade:

Toyota genuine differential gear oil LX API GL-5 or equivalent

Standard differential oil capacity:

0.45 to 0.55 liters (0.48 to 0.58 US qts., 0.40 to 0.48 Imp. qts.)

(c) Wait approximately 5 minutes and check that the oil level has not changed.

(d) Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the rear differential filler plug.

Torque:

39 N·m {398 kgf·cm, 29 ft·lbf}

(e) Drive the vehicle and check the oil level again. If necessary, add differential oil.

4. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for Torque Vectoring Differential)

(a) Add Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LX.

*a 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.196 in.)

(b) Pour oil into the rear differential carrier assembly so that the oil level is within 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.196 in.) of the bottom of the filler plug opening.

Standard oil grade:

Toyota genuine differential gear oil LX

Standard differential oil capacity:

0.50 to 0.54 liters (0.53 to 0.57 US qts, 0.44 to 0.47 Imp. qts)

(c) Wait approximately 5 minutes and check that the oil level has not changed.

(d) Move aside the No. 2 differential disconnect cover as shown in the illustration.

(e) Using SST, 10 mm straight hexagon wrench and union nut wrench, install a new gasket and the rear differential filler plug. SST: 09961-00950 Torque: Specified tightening torque : 39 N·m {398 kgf·cm, 29 ft·lbf} HINT: Calculate the torque wrench reading when changing the fulcrum length of the torque wrench. Click here When using a union nut wrench (fulcrum length of 22 mm (0.866 in.)) + SST (fulcrum length of 150 mm (5.906 in.)) + torque wrench (fulcrum length of 180 mm (7.087 in.)): 19.9 N*m (203 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

(f) Install the 2 bolts. Torque: 19.6 N·m {200 kgf·cm, 14 ft·lbf}

(g) Drive the vehicle and check the oil level again. If necessary, add differential oil.
