ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

CAUTION:

Be sure to correctly follow the removal and installation procedures for the rear seat airbag assemblies.

PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE

1. INSPECT REAR SEAT AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (for Vehicle not Involved in Collision)

(a) Perform a diagnostic system check.

for HV Model: Click here 2019 - 2022 MY Avalon HV [04/2018 -        ]; SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS: AIRBAG SYSTEM (for HV Model): DTC CHECK / CLEAR

(b) Visually check for defects with the rear seat airbag assemblies installed to the vehicle.

HINT:

The defects are as follows:

  • Scratches, broken or frayed threads on the surface of the rear side seatback assembly around the rear seat airbag assemblies
  • Small cracks in the rear side seatback assembly around the rear seat airbag assemblies
  • Significant discoloration on the rear side seatback assembly around the rear seat airbag assemblies

OK:

No defects are found.

If any defects are found, replace the rear side seatback pad or rear side seatback cover sub-assembly with a new one.

2. INSPECT REAR SEAT AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (for Vehicle Involved in Collision and Airbag not Deployed)

(a) Perform a diagnostic system check.

for HV Model: Click here 2019 - 2022 MY Avalon HV [04/2018 -        ]; SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS: AIRBAG SYSTEM (for HV Model): DTC CHECK / CLEAR

(b) Visually check for defects with the rear seat airbag assemblies removed from the vehicle.

HINT:

The defects are as follows:

  • Scratches, broken or frayed threads on the surface of the base fabric of the rear seat airbag assemblies
  • Marks from being dropped
  • Deformation of the installation surface of the rear seat airbag assemblies
  • Cracks or other damage to the wire harness or connector

OK:

No defects are found.

If any defects are found, replace the rear seat airbag assembly with a new one.
