P032515

Knock Sensor 1 Bank 1 or Single Sensor Circuit Short to Battery or Open

The knock sensor (bank 1) output voltage is higher than 4.5 V for 1 second or more (1 trip detection logic).

  • Open or short in knock sensor (bank 1) circuit
  • Knock sensor (bank 1)
  • ECM

P033015

Knock Sensor 2 Bank 2 Circuit Short to Battery or Open

The knock sensor (bank 2) output voltage is higher than 4.5 V for 1 second or more (1 trip detection logic).

  • Open or short in knock sensor (bank 2) circuit
  • Knock sensor (bank 2)
  • ECM

Comes on

DTC stored

  • SAE Code: P0333
  • DTC for Mexico Models: Applies

HINT:

When DTC P032515 or P033015 is stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ignition timing is delayed to its maximum retardation. Fail-safe mode continues until the ignition switch is turned off.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If the output voltage transmitted by the knock sensor remains high for 1 second or more, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the sensor circuit, and stores this DTC.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

HINT:

  • After repair has been completed, clear the DTC and then check that the vehicle has returned to normal by performing the following All Readiness check procedure.

    Click here 2017 - 2020 MY Sienna [08/2016 -        ]; 2GR-FKS (ENGINE CONTROL): SFI SYSTEM: DTC CHECK / CLEAR

  • When clearing the permanent DTCs, refer to the "CLEAR PERMANENT DTC" procedure.

    Click here 2017 - 2020 MY Sienna [08/2016 -        ]; 2GR-FKS (ENGINE CONTROL): SFI SYSTEM: DTC CHECK / CLEAR

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  6. Start the engine and wait 5 minutes [A].
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [B].
  8. Read the pending DTCs.

    HINT:

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  10. Input the DTC: P032515 or P033015.
  11. Check the DTC judgment result.

    Description

    NORMAL

    • DTC judgment completed
    • System normal

    ABNORMAL

    • DTC judgment completed
    • System abnormal

    INCOMPLETE

    • DTC judgment not completed
    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    HINT:

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE, idle the engine for 5 minutes and check the DTC judgment result again.
    • [A] to [B]: Normal judgment procedure.

The normal judgment procedure is used to complete DTC judgment and also used when clearing permanent DTCs.

    • When clearing the permanent DTCs, do not disconnect the cable from the battery terminal or attempt to clear the DTCs during this procedure, as doing so will clear the universal trip and normal judgment histories.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

HINT:

  • DTC P032515 is for the bank 1 knock sensor circuit.
  • DTC P033015 is for the bank 2 knock sensor circuit.
  • Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.

*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transaxle.

  • Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  • Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
