DISPOSAL

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

CAUTION:

Before performing pre-disposal deployment of any SRS component, review and closely follow all applicable environmental and hazardous material regulations. Pre-disposal deployment may be considered hazardous material treatment.

HINT:

When scrapping vehicles equipped with a seat belt pretensioner or disposing of a front seat outer belt (with seat belt pretensioner), always first activate the seat belt pretensioner in accordance with the procedures described below. If any abnormality occurs during activation of the seat belt pretensioner, contact the SERVICE DEPARTMENT of the DISTRIBUTOR.

PROCEDURE

1. DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONER (When Installed in Vehicle)

CAUTION:

An airbag or pretensioner may be activated by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a metal surface with bare hands to discharge static electricity before performing this procedure.
Never dispose of a front seat outer belt that has a non-activated pretensioner.
The seat belt pretensioner produces a loud, exploding sound when it activates. Perform the operation where it will not be a nuisance to nearby people.
When activating a front seat outer belt (with seat belt pretensioner), stand at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front seat outer belt.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt with an activated pretensioner.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the disposal.
Do not apply water to a front seat outer belt that has an activated pretensioner.
The seat belt pretensioner becomes extremely hot when the front seat outer belt assembly is deployed, so do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after deployment.
When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool). Perform procedures in a place away from electrical interference.

(a) Check the function of SST.

CAUTION:

When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST.

(1) Connect SST's red clip to the battery's positive (+) terminal and the black clip to the battery's negative (-) terminal.

HINT:

Do not connect the yellow connector. The yellow connector is used to connect to the seat belt pretensioner.

(2) Press the SST activation switch and check that the LED of the SST activation switch illuminates.

CAUTION:

If the LED is illuminated when the deployment switch is not pressed, SST may be malfunctioning. In this case, do not use the malfunctioning SST.
If the LED comes on when the activation switch is not being pressed, SST is malfunctioning. Replace SST.

(b) Disconnect SST from the battery.

(1) Remove the center pillar garnish lower (See page ).

(2) Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in protective tape, release the locking button.

(3) Disconnect the pretensioner connector and selectable force limiter connector.

(d) Disconnect the pretensioner connector. (w/o Selectable Force Limiter)

(1) Remove the center pillar garnish lower (See page ).

(2) Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in protective tape, release the locking button.

(3) Disconnect the pretensioner connector.

(4) Remove the pre-crash seat belt connector. (w/ Pre-crash Safety System)

(e) Connect SST. (w/ Selectable Force Limiter)

(1) Connect 2 SST and then connect them to the seat belt pretensioner.

Do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock to avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness.

(2) Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front of the vehicle.

(4) Connect 2 SST and then connect them to the selectable force limiter.

(g) Deploy the seat belt pretensioner and selectable force limiter.

(1) Confirm that no one is inside the vehicle or within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the vehicle.

(2) Connect the red clip of SST to the battery positive (+) terminal and the black clip to the negative (-) terminal.

(3) Press the SST deployment switch to deploy the seat belt pretensioner.

CAUTION:

The front seat outer belt becomes very hot when the front seat outer belt pretensioner is deployed, so leave it untouched for at least 30 minutes after it has been deployed.

HINT:

The seat belt pretensioner will deploy at the same time as the LED of SST illuminates.

(h) Dispose of the front seat outer belt assembly.

(1) Remove the front seat outer belt assembly and SST.

(2) Place the front seat outer belt assembly in a plastic bag, tie the end tightly, and dispose of it according to local regulations.

CAUTION:

The front seat outer belt assembly becomes very hot when the pretensioner is deployed, so leave it untouched for at least 30 minutes after the pretensioner is deployed.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed pretensioner.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed pretensioner.

HINT:

When scrapping a vehicle, deploy the seat belt pretensioner, and then scrap the vehicle with the front seat outer belt assembly installed.

2. DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY PRETENSIONER (When Not Installed in Vehicle)

CAUTION:

Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed pretensioner.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed pretensioner.
When deploying a seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool). Perform the operation in a place away from electrical interference.

NOTICE:

When disposing of a front seat outer belt assembly with a pretensioner, never deploy the seat belt pretensioner in the customer's vehicle.
Never dispose of a front seat outer belt assembly with a pretensioner that has not been deployed.
The front seat outer belt assembly produces an exploding sound when the pretensioner deploys, so perform the operation outdoors and where it will not disturb local residents.
When deploying a seat belt pretensioner, perform the operation at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the front seat outer belt assembly.
Be sure to follow the procedure listed below when deploying a seat belt pretensioner.

(a) Remove the front seat outer belt assembly (See page ).

(b) Wind the front seat outer belt assembly webbing with the retractor.

(c) When the front seat outer belt assembly webbing is sufficiently wound, cut the front seat outer belt assembly webbing approximately 100 mm (3.94 in.) from the retractor, as shown in the illustration.

HINT:

The retractor resistance increases in correlation with how much the front seat outer belt assembly webbing is wound.

(d) Check whether SST is functioning.

CAUTION:

Always use the specified SST when activating the seat belt pretensioner.

(1) Connect the red clip of SST to the battery positive (+) terminal and the black clip to the battery negative (-) terminal.

(3) Using braided wire, tie down the seat belt pretensioner to an unneeded tire and disc wheel.

Wire:

Stripped wire cross sectional area 1.25 mm² (0.0019 in.²) or more

CAUTION:

If the wire is too thin or an alternative object is used to tie down the seat belt assembly pretensioner, it may snap when the airbag is deployed. Always use a wire for vehicle use with a cross sectional area of at least 1.25 mm² (0.0019 in.²).

HINT:

To calculate the cross sectional area of the stripped wire: Cross sectional area = 3.14 x (Diameter)² / 4

(4) Place the front seat outer belt assembly on the ground and cover it with a tire and disc wheel. (w/ Selectable Force Limiter)

NOTICE:

Position the front seat outer belt assembly as shown in the illustration.
The tire and disc wheel may be damaged by the seat belt pretensioner deployment, so use an unneeded tire and disc wheel.

(5) Place the front seat outer belt assembly on the ground and cover it with a tire and disc wheel. (w/o Selectable Force Limiter)

NOTICE:

Position the front seat outer belt assembly as shown in the illustration.
The tire and disc wheel may be damaged by the seat belt pretensioner deployment, so use an unneeded tire and disc wheel.

(6) Position and hold SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the disc wheel.

NOTICE:

Do not damage the SST wire harness.

(g) Deploy the seat belt pretensioner. (w/ Selectable Force Limiter)

(1) Check that no one is within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the disc wheel.

(2) Connect the red clip of SST to the battery positive (+) terminal and the black clip to the battery negative (-) terminal.

(2) Place the front seat outer belt assembly in a plastic bag, tie the end tightly, and dispose of it according to local regulations.

CAUTION:

The front seat outer belt assembly becomes very hot when the pretensioner is deployed, so leave it untouched for at least 30 minutes after the pretensioner is deployed.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed pretensioner.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed pretensioner.

3. DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY SELECTABLE FORCE LIMITER (When Not Installed in Vehicle)

CAUTION:

Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed selectable force limiter.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
Do not apply water, etc. to a front seat outer belt assembly with a deployed selectable force limiter.
When deploying a seat belt selectable force limiter, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool). Perform the operation in a place away from electrical interference.

NOTICE:

When disposing of a front seat outer belt assembly with a selectable force limiter, never deploy the seat belt selectable force limiter in the customer's vehicle.
Never dispose of a front seat outer belt assembly with a selectable force limiter that has not been deployed.
The front seat outer belt assembly produces an exploding sound when the selectable force limiter deploys, so perform the operation outdoors and where it will not disturb local residents.
