CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

HINT:

When scrapping a vehicle equipped with the SRS or disposing of a instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly, deploy the airbag first in accordance with the procedure described below. If any abnormality occurs with the airbag deployment, contact the SERVICE DEPT. of the TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC.

PROCEDURE

1. DISPOSE OF INSTRUMENT PANEL PASSENGER WITHOUT DOOR AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (WHEN INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)

HINT:

Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the airbag.

(a) Check the function of SST (See page ). SST: 09082-00700

(b) Read the precaution (See page ).

(c) Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

CAUTION:

Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

(d) Disconnect the airbag connector.

(1) Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal.

(2) Remove the No. 4 instrument panel register assembly (See page ).

(3) Remove the No. 2 instrument cluster finish panel garnish (See page ).

(4) Remove the instrument cluster finish center panel assembly (See page ).

(5) Remove the No. 2 instrument panel box door sub-assembly (See page ).

(6) Pull the slider in the direction indicated by the arrow to release the lock and disconnect the airbag connector. Text in Illustration *a Slider NOTICE: Do not damage the airbag wire harness when handling the airbag connector.

(e) Connect SST.

(1) Connect the SST connector to the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly.

NOTICE:

Do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock to avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness.

(2) Close all doors.

NOTICE:

Do not damage the SST wire harness.

(3) Move SST to at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the vehicle. Text in Illustration *a Battery *b 10 m or more

(4) Connect the red clip of SST to the positive battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative battery terminal.

(f) Deploy the airbag.

(1) Check that no one is inside the vehicle or within a 10 m (32.8 ft) radius of the vehicle.

(2) Press the SST activation switch and deploy the airbag.

HINT:

The airbag is deployed as the LED on the SST activation switch illuminates.

2. DISPOSE OF INSTRUMENT PANEL PASSENGER WITHOUT DOOR AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (WHEN NOT INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)

HINT:

Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the airbag.

(a) Check the function of SST (See page ). SST: 09082-00700

(b) Remove the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly (See page ).

(c) Connect SST. Text in Illustration *a Locking Button SST: 09082-00700 SST: 09082-00802 09082-10801 09082-30801 NOTICE: Do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock to avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness.

(d) Using a braided wire harness, tie the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly to a tire.

1.25 mm² (0.0019 in.²) or more

CAUTION:

If the wire harness is too thin or an alternative object is used to tie the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly, it may be snapped by the shock when the airbag is deployed. Always use a wire harness for vehicle use with a cross-sectional area of at least 1.25 mm² (0.0019 in.²).

HINT:

To calculate the area of the stripped wire harness cross section:

Area = 3.14 x (Diameter)² divided by 4

(1) Position the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly inside the tire, as shown in the illustration. Tire Size Area Measurement A 360 mm (14.17 in.) B 185 mm (7.28 in.) CAUTION: Make sure that the wire harnesses are tight. If there is any slack in the wire harnesses, the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly may become loose due to the shock when the airbag is deployed. Always tie the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly with the airbag deployment side facing inside the tire. NOTICE: The tire will be marked by the airbag deployment, so use a waste tire.

(e) Place the tires.

(1) Place at least 2 tires under the tire to which the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly is tied.

(2) Place at least 2 tires over the tire to which the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly is tied. A disc wheel should be installed onto the top tire.

NOTICE:

Do not place the SST connector under the tire because it could be damaged.

(3) Tie the tires together with 2 wire harnesses. CAUTION: Make sure that the wire harnesses are tight. It is highly dangerous when a loose wire harness results in the tires coming free due to the shock when the airbag is deployed.

(f) Connect SST.

(1) Connect the SST connector. Text in Illustration *1 Instrument Panel Passenger Without Door Airbag Assembly *a Battery *b 10 m or more SST: 09082-00700 NOTICE: To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock. Also, secure some slack for the SST wire harness inside the tire.

(2) Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the airbag tied down to the tire.

(g) Deploy the airbag.

(1) Connect the red clip of SST to the positive battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative battery terminal.

(2) Check that no one is within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the tire to which the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly is tied.

(3) Press the SST activation switch and deploy the airbag.

CAUTION:

Before deployment, make sure that no one is near the airbag.

HINT:

The airbag is deployed as the LED on the SST activation switch illuminates.

(h) Dispose of the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly.

(1) Remove the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly from the tire.

(2) Place the instrument panel passenger without door airbag assembly in a plastic bag, tie it tightly and dispose of it according to local regulations.
