Title: BRAKE CONTROL / DYNAMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: C1434; Steering Angle Sensor Output Malfunction; 2016 - 2017 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 11/2017]

DTC

C1434

Steering Angle Sensor Output Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

Steering angle sensor signals are sent to the skid control ECU via the CAN communication system. When there is a malfunction in the CAN communication system, it will be detected by the steering angle sensor zero point malfunction diagnostic function.

DTC Code

DTC Detection Condition

Trouble Area

C1434

Error in communication between the skid control ECU and the steering angle sensor, or abnormal steering angle sensor zero point.

  • Steering angle sensor power supply
  • Spiral cable (Steering angle sensor)

WIRING DIAGRAM

Refer to DTC C1432 (See page 2016 - 2017 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 11/2017]; BRAKE CONTROL / DYNAMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: C1432; Steering Angle Sensor Power Source Voltage Malfunction+ ).

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

NOTICE:

Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

HINT:

  • When DTC U0073, U0123, U0124 and/or U0126 is output together with DTC C1434, inspect and repair the trouble areas indicated by DTC U0073, U0123, U01245 and/or U0126 first (See page 2016 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 08/2016]; BRAKE CONTROL / DYNAMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: U0073,U0100,U0123,U0124,U0126; Control Module Communication Bus OFF 2017 MY Sienna [08/2016 - 11/2017]; BRAKE CONTROL / DYNAMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: U0073,U0100,U0123,U0124,U0126; Control Module Communication Bus OFF ).
  • When any of the speed sensors or the yaw rate and acceleration sensor has trouble, DTCs for the steering angle sensor may be output even when the steering angle sensor is normal. When DTCs for the speed sensors or yaw rate and acceleration sensor are output together with DTCs for the steering angle sensor, inspect and repair the speed sensor and yaw rate and acceleration sensor first, and then inspect and repair the steering angle sensor.

PROCEDURE

1.

CHECK DTC

(a) Clear the DTCs (See page 2016 - 2017 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 11/2017]; BRAKE CONTROL / DYNAMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: DTC CHECK / CLEAR ).

(b) Turn the ignition switch off.

(c) Turn the ignition switch to ON again and check that no CAN communication system DTC is output (See page 2016 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 08/2016]; NETWORKING: CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM 2017 MY Sienna [08/2016 - 11/2017]; NETWORKING: CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM ).

(d) Start the engine.

(e) Drive the vehicle and turn the steering wheel to the right and left at a speed of 35 km/h (22 mph) and check that no speed sensor or yaw rate and acceleration sensor DTCs are output (See page 2016 - 2017 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 11/2017]; BRAKE CONTROL / DYNAMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM: DTC CHECK / CLEAR ).

Result

Result

Proceed to

No CAN communication system, speed sensor, or yaw rate and acceleration sensor DTCs are output

A

CAN communication system DTC is output

B

Speed sensor or yaw rate and acceleration sensor DTC is output

C

HINT:

  • If there is a malfunction in any of the speed sensors or the yaw rate and acceleration sensor, an abnormal value may be output although the steering angle sensor is normal.
  • If speed sensor and yaw rate and acceleration sensor DTCs are output simultaneously, repair these two sensors first and inspect the steering angle sensor.
B

INSPECT CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

(See page 2016 MY Sienna [12/2015 - 08/2016]; NETWORKING: CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING 2017 MY Sienna [08/2016 - 11/2017]; NETWORKING: CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

2.

INSPECT STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (POWER SOURCE TERMINAL)

(a) Turn the ignition switch off.

(b) Remove the steering wheel and the column cover lower.

(c) Make sure that there is no looseness at the locking part and the connecting part of the connector.

(d) Disconnect the steering angle sensor connector.

(e) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Voltage:
