REPLACEMENT

Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.

The procedure listed below is for the LH side.
PROCEDURE
1. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL FILLER PLUG
2. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRAIN PLUG
3. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
4. REMOVE TAIL EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (for RH Side)
5. SEPARATE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Put matchmarks on the rear drive shaft and differential side gear shaft.

(b) Remove the 4 nuts and 4 washers, and then separate the rear drive shaft.
NOTICE:
To protective the drive shaft boots, hang the separated drive shaft from a string or similar.
6. REMOVE DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT
(a) Using SST, remove the differential side gear shaft.

NOTICE:
Do not damage the oil seal.

(b) Using 2 screwdrivers and a hammer, remove the side gear shaft snap ring.
7. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL
(a) Using SST, remove the rear differential side gear shaft oil seal from the differential carrier assembly.

8. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT OIL SEAL
(a) Apply a light coat of MP grease to the lip of the new rear differential side gear shaft oil seal.
(b) Using SST and a hammer, tap a new rear differential side gear shaft oil seal into the differential carrier assembly.

Oil seal driven in depth (A):
4.2 to 4.8 mm (0.165 to 0.189 in.)
NOTICE:
Install the rear differential side gear shaft oil seal uniformly so that it is driven in straight.

9. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR SHAFT

(a) Install the new snap ring onto the differential side gear shaft.
(b) Using SST, install the differential side gear shaft.
NOTICE:
-
Set the snap ring with the opening side facing downward.
-
Do not tap in the side gear shaft at an angle. If the snap ring is installed at an angle, replace it with a new one and tap in the shaft again.
-
Do not damage the oil seal.

(c) Using a vernier caliper, measure the distance between the right and left side gear shafts, as shown in the illustration.

Standard Distance:
221 to 223 mm (8.71 to 8.77 in.)

10. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks and connect the rear drive shaft to the differential side gear shaft.

NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the boots and end cover.

(b) Install the rear drive shaft with the 4 nuts and 4 washers.
Torque:
56 N·m {571 kgf·cm, 41 ft·lbf}
11. INSTALL TAIL EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (for RH Side)
12. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRAIN PLUG
13. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL
14. INSPECT AND ADJUST DIFFERENTIAL OIL
15. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL FILLER PLUG
16. INSPECT FOR DIFFERENTIAL OIL LEAK
17. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque:
103 N·m {1050 kgf·cm, 76 ft·lbf}
18. INSPECT FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK
