Pitman Arm Replacement (DZW with NV8)
Special Tools- CH-47965 Pitman Arm Puller
- CH-49824 Steering Link Remover
- EN-24420-C Crankshaft Balancer Puller
Equivalent regional tools:Special Tools
Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the
steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin,
steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of
the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction
of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position
before disconnecting the following components:
- The steering column
- The intermediate shaft(s)
- The steering gear
After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the
steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to
follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become
un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think
the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR
coil’s centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
Note: Before replacing the power steering gear for excessive lash, a power steering fluid leak, or complaint of “feels loose”, check for existing bulletins that will aid in proper diagnosis.
Removal Procedure
- Front Wheelhouse Liner»Remove—Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement
- Remove underbody panels as necessary.Underbody Panel Component Locator

Note: Left side shown, right side similar.
- Front Stabilizer Shaft Bolt- Left Side and Right Side(1)»Remove[4x]
- Front Stabilizer Shaft Clamp- Left Side and Right Side(2)»Remove[2x]
- Without removing the front stabilizer shaft links, reposition the front stabilizer shaft out of the way.

- Steering Linkage Relay Rod Nut(1)@Pitman Arm»Remove

Caution: Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by
driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal
damage may result which will cause premature failure of the
joint.
Caution: When removing or installing suspension or steering components, ensure the tool used for removal/Installation does not come into contact with the component boot. If damage to the component boot has occurred the component must be replaced.
- Use the EN-24420-C Crankshaft Balancer Puller (1) and the CH-49824 Steering Link Remover (2) to separate the pitman arm (3) from the steering linkage relay rod.

- Intermediate Steering Shaft Lower Bolt(1)»Remove
Note: Always pull a steering shaft directly at the connecting joint. Never pull on a steering shaft other than at the connecting joint to try and separate it.
