Callout

Component Name

Danger: Always perform the High Voltage Disabling procedure prior to servicing any High Voltage component or connection. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.

The High Voltage Disabling procedure includes the following steps:

  • Identify how to disable high voltage.
  • Identify how to test for the presence of high voltage.
  • Identify condition under which high voltage is always present and personal protection equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.

Before working on any high voltage system, be sure to wear the following Personal Protection Equipment:

  • Safety glasses with appropriate side shields when within 15 meters (50 feet) of the vehicle, either indoors or outdoors.
  • Certified and up-to-date Class "0" Insulation gloves rated at 1000VAC/1500VDC with leather protectors.
    • Visually and functionally inspect the gloves before use.
    • Wear the Insulation gloves with leather protectors at all times when working with the high voltage battery assembly, whether the system is energized or not. Use only high voltage insulated tools.
    • Class 0 electrical insulating gloves and safety glasses must be worn during high-voltage system disabling procedures.
    • To mitigate arc flash and electrical shock hazards during high-voltage service at or above face level:
    • A face shield must be worn whenever the face is positioned at RESS height or closer.
    • Safety-rated arc flash (AF)-long sleeve shirts and pants, or arc flash (AF)-rated coveralls, must be always worn when connectors are disconnected, and personnel are in proximity to the high-voltage system.
    • After confirming zero voltage, gloves must remain on or be replaced with arc flash (AF) rated work gloves.

In addition, Specific to Ultium Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Battery Pack Service:

  • Wear PPE in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E, PPE Category 2 Minimum Arc Rating 8cal/cm 2.
  • Safety arc rated (AR) face shield and sock hood/balaclava.
  • Daily Wear AR rater long sleeve shirts and pants, or arc flash (AR) rated coveralls.
  • Hearing protection
  • After confirming zero voltage, the class 0 gloves must remain on or may be replaced with AR rated work gloves.
  • All AR rated PPE must remain on whenever battery pack high voltage connectors are unmated and you are within 1.5m (5 feet).
  • Use only high voltage insulated tools.

Failure to follow the procedures may result in serious injury or death.
