Fuel Pressure Relief
Warning: Fuel that flows out at high pressure can cause serious injury
to the skin and eyes. ALWAYS depressurize the fuel system before
removing components that are under high fuel pressure.
Warning: Remove the fuel tank cap and relieve the fuel system pressure
before servicing the fuel system in order to reduce the risk of
personal injury. After you relieve the fuel system pressure, a
small amount of fuel may be released when servicing the fuel lines,
the fuel injection pump, or the connections. In order to reduce the
risk of personal injury, cover the fuel system components with a
shop towel before disconnection. This will catch any fuel that may
leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when the
disconnection is complete.
Scan Tool Method — Preferred: - Install a scan tool and turn the ignition ON.
- Using the scan tool, command the fuel pump OFF allowing the low pressure fuel pump to shut off.
- Start the vehicle and allow the engine to idle until the engine stops. The engine will stop in approximately 5-20 seconds.
- Repeat step 3. Using the scan tool, verify pressure has dropped to a minimal level.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
Alternate Method — If a scan tool is not available: - Disable the fuel pump by removing the B+ fuel pump control module fuse. Refer to Electrical Center Identification Views.
- Start the vehicle and allow the engine to idle until the engine stops. The engine will stop in approximately 5-20 seconds.
- Attempt to restart the vehicle to ensure pressure has dropped to a minimal level.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
